Falling Rocks (also known as Stybarrow Crag) is a great dive site in Ullswater. Depths to suit most divers.
Parking/Meeting Place
The car parking layby on the A592, just over half a mile north of Glenridding. The nearest post code is CA11 0NG, but that covers a wide area, so a sat nav might not take you to the exact place.
It’s a popular spot with walkers and people participating in other water sports, so it can fill up quite early.
Facilities
None. You need to kit up out of your car or take a bench with you.
Dive site access
Just a short walk across the main road which can be busy with traffic, then down a slope and onto a pebbly/rocky beach area.
Diver proficiency
Suitable for all levels of qualified diver as it’s a gentle slope down underwater, so you can choose your depth.
In the water
We tend to dive to the right of the entry point. We often swim along at about 5 metres depth until we reach the large boulders, and then follow them down to our desired depth. There are other options though. Your Dive Manager should advise you.
Hazards/Risks/Special Equipment
A good torch and back up are essential as the water is usually very dark and peaty. Boat traffic, paddle boarders and swimmers can be encountered, so a DSMB should be deployed if surfacing in anything but very shallow water.
The road is usually very busy, so great care should be taken when crossing.
