Permissions

Many thanks to Furness Diving Club and to Seasearch for negotiating permission for diving in Buccleuch Dock.  Every dive needs approval by the Association of British Ports, and will be at an agreed date and time, which must be strictly adhered to, then we need to notify them when all divers are out of the water.  Surface cover is compulsory, and the person undertaking this duty must be in constant contact with Barrow Marine Control via marine radio. For any dives appearing on the Lunesdale Divers website, this permission will have been obtained by the Dive Manager about a month in advance, and the number of divers communicated to them about a week in advance.

Getting there

The nearest post code is LA14 2LA.  What 3 words ///whips.tried.order.  Enter through the gate and park in the large area, next to the water, behind the fence that runs along the side of the road.

Facilities

No facilities, so stop for toilets before you get there.  Possible options – Morrisons, Tesco Extra, Costa, MacDonalds.

Entry to the water

Enter and exit the water via the slipway at the ADEB Berth, adjacent to the Furness Diving Club store building.

In the water

A good torch and back up torch are essential.  A DSMB must be carried.  Your Dive Manager will advise as to whether an SMB is needed throughout the entire dive.  A line cutter or knife should be carried.

No tides or currents to worry about.  Maximum depth is about 8 metres with a silty bottom which can be easily stirred up by careless finning, reducing visibility to less than a metre.  However if not disturbed, visibility is generally better, at around 3 to 4 metres.  The most interesting dives, where the abundant marine life can be found, are along the dock walls, and on the pillars of the jetty to the left.  A wide variety of sponges, soft corals, sea squirts etc. can be seen.  Crabs are common, as are small fish and jellyfish.  Seasearch North West England regularly conduct marine life surveys here.

Diver proficiency

Suitable for all levels of qualified diver, however good buoyancy control is essential, to avoid stirring up the silty bottom.
