Theory training for the Seasearch Observer qualification.  The five short sessions will be delivered to members of LSAC via Zoom by Wendy Northway, Seasearch Co-ordinator for the North West.  Each session will last between an hour and 90 minutes starting at 7:00pm each evening from Monday 25th January through to Friday 29th.

If you’re not familiar with Seasearch, it’s a project for volunteer scuba divers and snorkelers who have an interest in what they’re seeing under water, want to learn more, and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of Britain. It was set up in the 1990’s by the Marine Conservation Society.

The main aim is to map out the various types of sea bed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of Britain. In addition they are recording what lives in each area, establishing the richest sites for marine life, the sites where there are problems, and the sites which need protection.
Further information can be found on their website

The cost for the theory training is £40 per person which includes a pack containing student notes and a qualification book.  If you have already done this course and wish to repeat it as a refresher, without a new set of student notes and qualification book, then the cost is just £20.

Following the theory sessions, we will need to arrange two sea dives for participants to practice completing observation forms under the supervision of a Seasearch instructor.  Qualified Observers will then be able to record details of the sea bed and sea life on any future sea dive that they do, and submit those recordings to the national database, thereby contributing to this important conservation research work.
